Jim and I ran track and cross country together at Edina. Jim may have got his wandering spirit from our coach Nyllo Ed Hendrickson, who is a whole other story. We became good friends after high school and shared apartments and life experiences together. Jim was a colorful character. We saw Bruce Springsteen at the Guthrie Theater in Sept of 1975 and the following spring at the Civic Center Theatre. He lived in many cities and got the pulse of each one of them. He was in the know. That’s just how he operated. He unfortunately developed dementia in his later years and then was diagnosed with cancer. May he Rest In Peace. Curt Blandin
I remember early season track training at U of M Field House in 1971. For a person of his height he was an amazingly fast an smooth runner. Impressed me as a very humble guy.
Thank you Curt for the memories of Jim Hipps. He will be missed. I still have nearly one hundred ticket stubs of concerts we saw together over the years. Guthrie Theater (Springsteen as Curt mentioned, Miles Davis, Tom Waits - a few notables), Minneapolis Auditorium (Jefferson Airplane, Leon Russell and Van Morrison to name three of many concerts), Minnehaha Park (Marshall Tucker Band), St Paul Auditorium (Leon Russell, Shawn Phillips, Edgar Winter), Orchestra Hall (many incredible concerts - Jim worked in the ticket office), St. Paul Civic Center, Met Center and the MN State Fair. Perhaps my favorite (although difficult to pick one) was Bonnie Raitt at the Marigold Ballroom in 1973. We also did roadtrips to Madison, Milwaukee, Chicago, Denver (Red Rocks) in search of concerts. Jim was a dear friend to many of the music lovers and musicians in our class. Rest In Peace Jim.
Jim took me under his wing in ninth grade. I, a transfer student to Valley View (and looking to find some kind of identity), had some idea that because I loved to run, that cross country could be an activity for me to begin entering into wider public school actitvities. Towards me, a new and awkard social stranger, he was such a nice and gentle guy. This meant so much.
As others have noted, Jim was a good friend, and he was a great person to see a concert with- he rarely missed a good one.
He was also a pretty funny guy. The photo above is from our senior year Whigrean.The inscription he wrote below the pic of his long-haired self, is classic Hipps humor, dry and a bit self-deprecating. "Kids these days!"
Jim was a good friend and neighbor so we spend considerable time together in our youth. One of my memories is attending a Doors concert with him in 1968 before we could drive and being taken to & from the concert by his mother in a dark blue Chevrolet Malibu. May he rest in peace.
